How to Take Better Notes in Class and While Studying

Better notes are not longer notes. The pages that help most do two jobs at once: they keep your attention on the lesson now, and they make later studying easier. Stop trying to capture every sentence

A common mistake is treating notes like a transcript. That usually creates dense pages with no hierarchy and very little meaning. In class, the real target is the structure of the lesson: the main point, the supporting ideas, the examples, and the places where the instructor signals importance by repeating, contrasting, or summarizing.   • Write a short heading when the topic changes.
  • Indent examples, definitions, or evidence under that heading.
  • Mark confusing spots with a question mark instead of pretending you understood them.

That filter is simple, but it changes the quality of the page. For example, in a biology lecture, a weak note might copy a full slide about cell transport. A stronger note might say, “Passive vs. active transport,” then list the difference, one example of each, and one question about when ATP is required. That second version is shorter, but it is much easier to study from because it already shows relationships.

Use a format that turns the same page into a study tool

A Cornell-style or two-column layout works well because it separates capture from review. During class, the main area holds the notes. Soon after class, the narrow margin becomes cues or questions, and the bottom becomes a short summary. Tip: Typing versus handwriting is not a moral choice. Handwriting may help some students slow down and summarize, while typing may be more practical for fast lectures, technical notation, or accessibility needs. If your notes are digital, resist the urge to make them pretty during class. Use abbreviations, dashes, arrows, and rough indentation. Cleaning up the layout can happen later. During the lecture, thinking matters more than formatting.

The biggest improvement happens after class, not during it

  1. Within 24 hours, fill obvious gaps from memory, the textbook, or posted slides.
  2. Turn headings into questions. Instead of writing “Causes of inflation,” write “What usually pushes inflation up?”

One nuance matters here: rereading feels smooth, so it can trick students into thinking they know the material. Self-testing feels harder, which is exactly why it is more revealing. Match the notes to the class instead of forcing one style everywhere

Different subjects call for different notes. In math, chemistry, or economics, the crucial material may be worked steps, decision rules, and where mistakes happen, not polished paragraphs. In history or literature, the important parts may be claims, evidence, and competing interpretations. In a reading-heavy course, it often helps to combine reading notes and lecture notes under the same headings so you are not studying two disconnected versions of the topic.

It also helps to separate support tools from learning itself. Posted slides, recordings, and AI summaries can be useful backups, but they do not replace your own selection, phrasing, and recall. If a class moves too fast to capture the essentials, it may be worth asking whether the instructor shares outlines, whether recording is allowed, or whether campus academic support or disability services can help.

Better notes are usable notes. If a page helps identify the main idea, preserve the confusing parts, and create a quick self-quiz later, it is doing its job. Start by writing less, organizing sooner, and studying from memory instead of just rereading.
